Name and Occupation? Brian Anderson, Professional Skateboarder of 10 years now. And your sponsors are? Girl, Fourstar, Nike SB, Independent Trucks, Spitfire, CCS, Skate Mental. You grew up in quite a large family of brothers and sisters. Was it hard being the youngest of how many? I am the youngest of 14. Nah, it wasn't really hard when I was a kid. There were so many people to watch me and take care of me. It did get hard when I was a teenager because everybody moved out and I felt so much older than I was which most teenagers do. I wanted to move out at age 14 but I had to stay in school and I ended up graduating so that was cool. But I still felt a little ripped off. When you first got on Toy Machine, did you have to come up with footage quick for the legendary 'Welcome To Hell'? I had a little bit of footage. Then Jamie Thomas and Ed Templeton thought it would be a good idea for me to come to San Diego to film with Jamie. They wanted me to be in the video but they also wanted to see what I could produce. So that time in San Diego, I got the rest of the footage I needed and made it in the video. You won skater of the year in 1999. Did you expect that? Not during the first half of that year. I was excited that I had got a T-Eddy award for Rookie of the year when I first turned pro. In the later part of 1999, I won a major contest and had done a few interviews. I guess Jake and the guys felt that I had plenty of coverage and I was the right candidate for the award. It was such an honor and I still feel honored today to be apart of that elite list of skaters. Was the transition From Toy to Girl a hard choice for you personally? Yeah it was really hard because Toy Machine was my first sponsor and Ed Templeton did a lot for me. It seemed like Ed would do anything for me. I stayed at his house whenever I wanted and he introduced me to all that goes with skateboarding (Tours Etc). But then later on Toy started to change and it wasn't Ed's fault it was just that the original team was leaving and I had grown so fond of those guys. It kind of felt like I didn't want to wait for Ed to rebuild the team. Back around skater of the year time the guys from Girl had mentioned me riding for Girl but at that time, I was like nah I can't do that. So months later, I called Rick Howard and asked if the opportunity was still there to ride for Girl. He called the team and everyone was into it. Ed and I are still friends to this day. Outside of skateboarding what else do you like to do? Do you still have your little clothing project? I don't have the clothing project that was thru Savier. I have been working on designs for Fourstar lately. I really like that they let the riders influence the design of the clothing. I have also been painting a lot at my house lately due to hurting my ribs and knee. I also ride my bike a lot to keep my legs in shape while I am not skating. The music you use in your video parts goes so well with your skating. When you hear those songs randomly on the radio or elsewhere do you vision your parts as they play? Yeah, I usually see some of the tricks I did in those parts. I can't remember all the tricks. But I will have friends mess with me and put my songs on the jukebox when were out to mess with me. I just put my head down like "Why do you guys have to do this to me? What's hot in the music world of Brian Anderson right now? I listen to the radio a lot. Here in San Francisco they have great soul stations. Gladys Knight, Earth Wind And Fire and all that soulful stuff. I have been into Little Wayne for along time and he's kind of popular now. He's my favorite rapper. I also have been into some country now. I really like the Loretta Lynn album that was produced by Jack White. You were recently showcased in an art show with the Gonz. What was that like? It was cool. It was for the 10th anniversary for Fourstar clothing. Mark and I went to LA and put up panels of wood and painted them. We jammed out on them for 6 to 8 hrs straight and came up with a cool collaborated art project. We then took the panels down and hung them up for the party for everyone to look at. It was a good time for sure. What's your next video project that the kids can look forward to from you? The Nike video, which is due to be out in September. So I have about 5 more months left to film for that project. Nike is renting a place in Spain in April for us to continue filming. I can only imagine what it would be like to travel to Japan with the Fourstar team. Was that trip as fun as Ty made it out to be on film? Yeah it was. As a team we all get along so good and we're getting older so we respect each others space but we still have a lot of fun when we're on tour. It's the same thing with Girl. It was also cool to have P.J. Ladd and Guy Mariano on that trip because I really don't get to see them that much. That was the first trip where the whole team was together. We drove all around and got to see some amazing things. Watching everybody skate was super motivating. 2007 is here. What can the kids out there expect from Brian Anderson? A Thrasher interview and some stuff in The Skateboard Mag. I will also have my first part for Nike dropping in September. I really love Thrasher and getting an interview with them is special. I like all the magazines but Thrasher holds a special part of me. Jake Phelps and I are good friends and I just want this to be a really sick Thrasher interview. I have been lagging on my Fourstar ads so I hope to have a few for them this year and some CCS stuff as well... |
